[Dear friends, From Purim till Pesach this year, we are sending you a daily comment on the meaning of Pesach, especially in connection with concern for the Earth and the climate crisis -- each day by a different writer. Enjoy! -- David Eber & AW, eds.]
Can it be that just one crumb can bring destruction?
Is it so that just one slice can delude and demolish all?
A craving for a taste of gluten seems sincere and yet is deadly.
What has happened to our wheat?
Where have all the good grains gone?
Mizrayim may be built on its own bread,
a yeast of yet another kind,
and so my mind can fill with fluff
and reasons why that’s fine.
A craving by another name - addiction, loss of self -
still makes a slave a slave.
How long, O G-d, will craving last before the last surrender?
It can’t be both. One must choose.
No space exists for fogginess in holiness.
Is it You I really fear and so would rather choose a crumb than life?
This Pesach comes in many ways, requiring detox of the mind and heart.
The same with chametz cleared and sold.
What may be food for others is not G-d’s bread for me.
As midnight nears, may I be clear and open,
detoxed as a preparation for the four redemptions,
feasting on a bread of freedom, no longer a slave,
but sane and sober in the joy of serving You.
