We the People

Will Fudeman, composer of “We the People” writes why he wrote and recorded the song:

As David Cobb makes clear in the talk he gives as he travels across the United States, the U.S. Supreme Court decision in the Citizens United case skews our political system, unfairly favoring a small number of wealthy corporate CEO's whose top priority is their short-term profit motive. Wise decisions concerning jobs, climate change, health care, issues of war and peace, and electoral reform will be more likely once we amend the U.S. Constitution to abolish the notion of corporations having unlimited ability to influence the political process and elections in the U.S.

Transnational corporations are amoral—they exist to pursue profits, regardless of their impact on the quality of our lives. Limiting the power of transnational corporations will ultimately benefit all of us, including wealthy businessmen who make foolish decisions in pursuit of profits.

A large majority of Americans already agree that the Citizens United decision was bad for our democracy; see “Poll: Everyone Hates the Citizens United decision” http://tpmdc.talkingpointsmemo.com/2010/02/poll-everyone-hates-the-citizens-united-ruling.php <http://tpmdc.talkingpointsmemo.com/2010/02/poll-everyone-hates-the-citizens-united-ruling.php> and “Citizens United?” http://www.yesmagazine.org/blogs/brooke-jarvis/citizens-united.

Compared to other successful movements for social change (such as the Civil Rights Movement and the Women’s Rights Movement), it may not be very difficult to mobilize and amend the Constitution as suggested by www.movetoamend.org <http://www.movetoamend.org/>.

While we may care about who will sit in the White House after the 2012 elections, I believe it is far more important to put our energies into creating a more fair way to elect our leaders by limiting the excessive power and influence of corporate wealth. That's why I wrote and produced the song “We the People”—to speedily spread the notion that we can join together and amend the Constitution as suggested by the people at www.movetoamend.org <http://www.movetoamend.org/>.

If you read this far, you get another song for dessert... new lyrics to "Imagine you've got Healthcare." http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GKXIFiNz37s <http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GKXIFiNz37s>

All best,
Will
