Declaring Peace: Nonviolent Actions this Fall to End the Iraq War

The Declaration of Peace National Working Group

has set a Framework for Nonviolent Action for the Week of September 21-28 in Washington, D.C., and around the country. We are encouraging all local organizers to coordinate participation in any or all of these action days.

You can contact the national DOP Campaign at info@declarationofpeace.org or 773-777-7858.

If a comprehensive plan for an end to the US war in Iraq is established and activated by Thursday, September 21, we will celebrate and take steps to monitor progress. If, as is more likely to be the case, a plan has not been initiated, we will publicly state or dissent for the current policy and support a comprehensive end to the war by “declaring peace” and taking action within following framework:

Thursday (September 21): The week of actions opens in Washington, DC with a national press event highlighting the activities planned across the country September 21-28.

This will be followed by nonviolent civil disobedience in the US Capitol to dramatize the launch and to focus the call for Congress to act. Candlelight vigils will take place that evening across the US and internationally as a visible representation of the deep commitment to declare peace across the world.

Friday (September 22): Across the US, individuals and groups will participate in nonviolent actions, including legal demonstrations and nonviolent civil disobedience at District Congressional offices.

Saturday-Sunday (September 23-24): Emphasis will be placed on organizing in home communities, with local public events calling for the end of the war and for Congress to act, such as marches, festivals and rallies. On Sunday, a national event will be held (to be determined) on the Mall in Washington, DC.

Monday (September 25): Across the US, individuals and groups will participate in nonviolent actions, including legal demonstrations and nonviolent civil disobedience at District Congressional offices. In preparation for action at the Capitol, we will conduct nonviolence trainings and pre-action meetings in Washington, DC.

Tuesday-Wednesday (September 26-27): Building on the momentum of these actions across the country, two days of nonviolent civil disobedience and legal protest take place at the Capitol.

Participation at a local and regional level will drive the success of the Declaration of Peace week of action. We encourage you to begin developing grassroots involvement in your home communities. Examples of possible actions might include: sit-ins at your Congressional DC/District offices, public rallies, educational programs, candlelight vigils, counter-military recruiting efforts, street theatre, nonviolent civil disobedience, etc.
