Should the US Atty-Gen encourage torture?

Rabbi Arthur Waskow 11/18/2004

Should the next Attorney General of the United States be someone who advised the President he could annul the Geneva Conventions and OK the use of torture ?

President Bush's new nominee for Attorney General — Alberto Gonzales — did exactly that.

What can we do? We welcome your comments and suggestions to this Weblog. These are our own suggestions:

a) We can write our Senators and the press to protest. Click here to be able to do this easily: —

b) We can take part in The Shalom Center's Hanukkah celebration on December 12 in New York, where we will not only honor our heroes but take action to walk in their path.

WE WILL TAKE ACTION TO OPPOSE CONFIRMATION OF MR. GONZALES, UNLESS HE VIGOROUSLY REPUDIATES HIS PAST ACTIONS ENCOURAGING TORTURE AND VOWS TO SUPPORT AMERICAN AND INTERNATIONAL LAWS AGAINST TORTURE.

To join in this celebration for kindling new light in this time of darkness, check out the lead article on ths Website and then arrange for tickets.

More details on the Attorney General issue and a summary of the Gonzalez memo, provided by the International Law of War Association, can be found here on our website
