Abraham Joshua Heschelriter, social activist, rabbi, and teacheras one of the most influential religious leaders of the 20th century. Perhaps best known for his participation in the 1965 Selma, Alabama demonstration alongside the Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr., Rabbi Heschel was also a gifted speaker and the author of nearly a dozen books on philosophy and Jewish life. Through his writing, speaking, and social justice activities, he inspired countless numbers of peopleews and non-Jews alikeo work at bringing peace and justice to the world.

Heschel was the descendent of seven generations of Hasidic mastersharismatic rabbis and teachers who led Jewish communities throughout Eastern Europe. Although he left the world of Hasidism as a teenager, he took with him the core teachings of his ancestors, including God love for all creation, and the responsibility of human beings to serve as God partners in the healing and transformation of the world. In his travels to synagogues, churches, and universities, and in his meetings with world leaders, Heschel spread his message of justice and compassion, touching the hearts and minds of people of different faiths and backgrounds.

Or Rose is co-director (with Ebn Leader) of the beit midrash at the Rabbinical school at Boston Hebrew College. He is a Ph.D. student in Jewish thought at Brandeis University, specializing in Jewish mysticism and modern Jewish thought. Mr. Rose has also served as an educator at the Abraham Joshua Heschel School in New York and the Jewish Community Day School in Newton, MA. His second book, In Speech & In Silence: The Hasidic Masters on Contemplative Living, will be published this fall by Jewish Lights Publishing.
